Formally trained as a research scientist, I approach every fleece, every new fiber blend, every dye lot as an experiment, the results of which I use to inform the next. I carry this process of inquiry into my art, using many of the same yarns and fiber preparations that I offer to others under the “Only the Finest” brand, to create unique woven and felted cloth. In 2019 I opened my studio, “Nuttle Fiber Art & Design,” as a platform for my personal exploration in the fiber arts as well as a teaching space for sharing my practice with others. It is here that I explore the interplay of color and texture and the many qualities of natural fiber.
I am inspired by the concept of “Slow Cloth,” the principles of which were conceived and originally articulated by Elaine Lipson in 2007. Among the 10 qualities laid out in her manifesto are the joy of the process, the possibility of mastery, the thoughtful use of materials and their source, honoring the culture and tradition, and the commitment to community, sharing and things well-made. These are the same principles and values I strive to bring to my ongoing personal exploration of cloth.
